England are one of the major European footballing nations, having created the sport of Association Football. However, in recent years, they have not lived up to expectations in international tournaments, even failing to qualify for the 2008 European Cup. This resulted in them appointing veteran manager, Fabio Capello. Despite recent failures by the national team, the English Premier Division is regarded as the best league in the world by many pundits and fans.

England is one of the few nations to have four leagues in which all players and are professional. Below that the top four tiers are "non-league" teams who, despite their name, play in leagues separated be region.

English clubs have also done well in the European Cup, with at least one team in the Semi-finals during most competitions in recent years.

Despite the recent failure of not qualifying for the European Cup, the English national teams is regarded as one of the best in the world. New manager, Fabio Capello, led the team, captained by John Terry, to win every game in their World Cup Qualifying group. It has plenty of established players, some of whom are among the best in the world. Big names include Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Frank Lampard. Despite this, they have only ever won the World Cup once, in 1966. England have a fairly strong Youth Team, with talent including Jack Rodwell and Mark Beevers.
